Conference on “Rethinking the Nexus between Conflict, Climate Change and Environment in West Asia and North Africa”

ESCWA participated in the conference on “Rethinking the Nexus between Conflict, Climate Change and Environment in West Asia and North Africa” organized by the Arab Reform Initiative and partners on 1 February 2023 in Beirut, Lebanon. Ms. Carol Chouchani Cherfane, Director of the Arab Centre for Climate Change Policies at ESCWA, delivered the opening presentation during the session on “Post-Conflict Governance: How to Build Strong Post-Conflict Institutions that can Adapt/Mitigate Environmental Impacts,” by reviewed various steps involved in mainstreaming climate change in institutional and policy frameworks.  This included focus on how RICCAR regional climate projections for the Arab Region and Mashreq region and RICCAR’s integrated vulnerability assessment methodology support informed decision-making, integrated planning, and access to knowledge for advancing climate action through a science-based approach at the regional and country levels.  Special attention was paid to the importance of strengthening adaptative capacity and mobilizing climate finance to respond to the needs of Arab States.

About Riccar


The central aim of this Regional Knowledge Hub is to provide access to information that can facilitate cooperation, coordination, dialogue and exchange among Arab States, organizations and stakeholder and to support awareness raising as well as regional networking and exchange on issues related to climate change and water resources in the region. Access to RICCAR assessment findings and associated datasets is being made available on this Regional Knowledge Hub, which is comprised of two open-access components: a website and a data portal. This online platform complements, and builds upon, the findings and processes already presented in the main report and its technical annex, as well as the series of publications that elaborate further on the work being pursued collectively under RICCAR.
