Vulnerability assessment of the water sector to climate change in Jordan
Lead Author: ESCWA

Description

This technical report focuses on the vulnerability of the water sector to climate change in Jordan. It serves to identify areas of water resource vulnerability and adaptation challenges that are critical for managing freshwater surface and groundwater resources and for delivering water supply, sanitation and wastewater services for different user groups in light of the changing climate. The analysis is focused on three time periods, namely the near-term (2021-2040) and the mid-term (2041-2060), as compared to a reference period (1995-2014).

The regional climate projections for the Mashreq Domain used to inform this report were produced by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). The integrated assessment vulnerability methodology used was developed under the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR), which is coordinated by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) through its Arab Centre for Climate Change Policies.

About Riccar

The central aim of this Regional Knowledge Hub is to provide access to information that can facilitate cooperation, coordination, dialogue and exchange among Arab States, organizations and stakeholder and to support awareness raising as well as regional networking and exchange on issues related to climate change and water resources in the region. Access to RICCAR assessment findings and associated datasets is being made available on this Regional Knowledge Hub, which is comprised of two open-access components: a website and a data portal. This online platform complements, and builds upon, the findings and processes already presented in the main report and its technical annex, as well as the series of publications that elaborate further on the work being pursued collectively under RICCAR.
